The eldest child of Jim Bob and Michelle Dugar made headlines in 2015 after several girls claimed he had sexually assaulted them years before. Josh apologized for his actions at the time, revealing he once sought counseling for his “wrongdoings” as a teenager.
“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted in an inexcusable way for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret,” Josh wrote via the family’s Facebook account in May 2015. hurt others, including my family and close friends.”
The incident – which involved four of Josh’s sisters – and its resurfacing story led the Duggars to re-examine their dynamic. In April 2021, jinger duggar said exclusively We Weekly that despite the pain Josh brought to the group, everyone came out stronger.

Later that month, Josh turned heads again when he was arrested in Arkansas for allegedly receiving and possessing child pornography. His family was again tested, with several siblings speaking out about the case.
“The recent charges against Josh sadden us deeply. We did not want to rush into making statements while trying to process the news ourselves,” Joy-Anna Duggar and her husband, Austin Forsyth, said in a statement via their Instagram Stories in May 2021. “We are especially heartbroken by the reality that there are children around the world who are being abused and exploited. We ask for prayer for everyone involved and it is our continuing prayer that the truth be revealed.
In December 2021, Josh was convicted on two counts of receiving and possessing child pornography. He has yet to be convicted for his crimes but faces up to 20 years in prison and could face $250,000 in fines on each count.
“This trial was more like a funeral than anything else,” said his sister Jill Dugar said in a statement about her and her husband Derick Dillard‘s blog following the conclusion of the trial.
Josh’s mother, however, continued to fight for her son to be released. In a letter obtained by the Daily Mail in May 2022, Michelle asked for clemency in regards to Josh’s sentencing, arguing that he is a good man deep down.
“[Josh] has friends and family who will love and support him in his abilities to succeed as a husband, father, business owner and man both now and in the future,” she wrote, noting that she still extends “continued love and encouragement to Joshua.” Michelle added, “We ask that he be reunited with his wife and family in a timely manner.”
