Is that the official English title? I wonder what was the thought process of the translator/locator who decided to change the title of Forest Bear is Hibernating to *Caressing the Nipples* of My Hibernating Bear…

I was about to ask this… Apparently it was the full title of the first volumethen it was changed to a less racy one, because at Shueisha the title is already simply “Mori no kuma-san touminchuu”.

Also, a note on the translation (again….) “mederu” is not “to caress”, in this context it means to caress, or, depending on the plot description, to nurse. Also, the grammar, really guys… the translation is “Mr Forest Bear got his nipples fondled while he was hibernating.” (Sounds long and clunky? Sure, but that’s pretty much the point of these titles.)

I don’t think ANN decided one morning to have an article with the word “nipples” before lol Still, the manga looks familiar as I’ve read it before, I didn’t know that was the translated name.

Jeez, whoever translated the title must really want him to know that this is going to be an adult hentai anime and NOT something teenagers should stumble upon. A little daring and brave of them, I must say. If you’re going to go completely pig, you might as well.

Probably the same one that turned The Legend of the Blue Wolves (Aoki Okami-tachi no Densetsu) in Hot space cowboys. rolling eyes

Honestly, BL manga changing full name is not that uncommon in English. One called Zombie Hide Sex in Japanese (not translated, it’s just called that) was posted on Renta under the title Fooling Around While Zombies Roam. And then there’s the whole Dick Fight Island situation.

Just by browsing the first pages of Renta I found “I’ll Have My Cake and Eat It, Too” which in Japan was called I want this, I want that (according to deepl)

The problem is less that the names are drastically changed (and not just for BL titles), but that they are changed for. Smile And yes, Dick Fight Island is another absurd example. On the other hand, the Zombie one is an improvement.

Pssst – I just wrote above that apparently it was the actual manga title (although the English translation is wonky, which may or may not be the work of ANN’s translator) that was changed from Japanese side.

What I’m wondering is where ANN got the full/old title from, given that the source articles quoted only has the short/new, as well as all the articles that I could find with this news. (Slow day at work…)

To be fair, although ANN has certainly dropped some wonky translations and romanizations in the past (sorry guys/girls/others, you won this particular roast), in this case “Caressing the Nipples of My Hibernating Bear” is taken from the English version on Coolmic, and is otherwise par for the course for a Screamo version. The site linked in the article is only available on mobile.

Which is to say, this is definitely one of those times where the Japanese title change makes sense, because it’s actually a pretty sweet story, and it’s not just the nipples of the bear who are caressed by the latest volumes. (Although the bird-boy-on-cat-boy action is still at the “tease” level.)

In this case, I really wonder about the localization choices because, by mistranslating “mederu” and apparently twisting the real story aside… stroking nipples? Really? Anime Smile + Sweat Drop I mean… English isn’t my first language so it might just be me, but to me it sounds like a blushing young woman of protected religious upbringing trying to say something racy, then stumbling at the last moment out of embarrassment. Caress nipples, what. Anime Smile + Sweat Drop Who are they even targeting this at?

Could have fooled me. Very happy

were going way in the weed under poetic license now, but it’s not a entirely incorrect expression in English. For example, you could caress someone’s face, or maybe their thighs, but nipples are usually a little small for that level of attention. But both”mederu” and “petting” imply a certain amount of loving attention, so it’s not an inaccurate translation. Just, a little, a lot. “Magnet the nipples of my hibernating bear” would perhaps express the same hands-free/hands-free duality, but the imagination can go much further with this particular euphemism.

Also, I think you answered your own question. Laughing

Thanks for the explanation of the translation!

And also turned Asobi ni Iku Yo (I came to play) into “Cat Planet Cuties”? Yeah, a whole different audience, I know, but the point still stands.

I’m curious about this one and would like to sign up for their newsletter.

Ok, seriously… I might just take that for the title.
